This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft rooted dirt with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, rooted dirt is a new item that was introduced in the Caves & Cliffs Update: Part I. It is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace. Instead, you need to find and gather this item in the game.

Where to find Rooted Dirt in Creative Mode

How to get Rooted Dirt in Survival Mode

In Minecraft, you can add rooted dirt to your inventory in Survival mode by finding an azalea tree and digging the dirt under it. So, let's get started!

1. Find an Azalea Tree

First, you need to find an azalea tree in your Minecraft world. Azalea trees are usually found above ground in the Lush Caves biome.

TIP: Find an azalea tree and follow the rooted dirt under the azalea tree down to the cave system. The underground area of the Lush Caves biome is the best part of this biome. So dig down and explore!

This is what the rooted dirt looks like around an azalea tree:

2. Hold a Shovel

You can dig up the rooted dirt with anything including your hand, but it is faster to use a tool such as a shovel:

In this example, we are going to use a diamond shovel to dig up the rooted dirt because it has higher durability than the other shovels.

3. Dig up the Rooted Dirt

The game control to mine the rooted dirt depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the block of rooted dirt.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the block of rooted dirt.
  • For Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the block of rooted dirt.
  • For Education Edition, left click and hold on the block of rooted dirt.

You will need to continue to dig until the block breaks and a smaller block of rooted dirt finally appears. The block of rooted dirt will float on the ground.

4. Pick up the Rooted Dirt

Make sure you pick up the rooted dirt before it disappears.
