Where to Find a Geode
In Minecraft, a Geode is a structure that spawns naturally in the game. It is found underground in the Overworld, sometimes at the end of an underground cave system. Other times, you will have to mine to find one.
This is what a Geode looks like:
Layers of Geode
A Geode is made of 3 layers - the outer layer is smooth basalt, the second layer is calcite, and the inner layer is blocks of amethyst and budding amethyst (with different growth stages of amethyst).
1. Outer Layer of Geode
The outer layer of a Geode is made out of smooth basalt and looks like this:
To mine smooth basalt, you need to dig up the smooth basalt with a pickaxe. If you try to dig up the smooth basalt with your hand or other tool (that is not a pickaxe), the small block of smooth basalt will not appear. And you will not be able to add the smooth basalt to your inventory.
2. Second Layer of Geode
The second layer of a Geode is made out of another stone called calcite and looks like this:
To mine calcite, you need to dig up the calcite with a pickaxe to get the drop (same as when you are mining smooth basalt).
3. Inside Layer of Geode
The inside layer of a Geode is made out of various types of amethyst and looks like this:
Within the inner layer of the Geode, you can find small amethyst buds, medium amethyst buds, large amethyst buds, and amethyst clusters growing on the budding amethyst blocks. You can also find amethyst blocks inside of the geode, but amethyst will not actually grow on these blocks. Amethyst will only grow on budding amethyst.
Variations of amethyst will create beautiful sounds when you walk on them, break them, place them, or hit them with a projectile:
Types of Amethyst |
---|
Small Amethyst Bud |
Medium Amethyst Bud |
Large Amethyst Bud |
Amethyst Cluster |
Amethyst Block |
Budding Amethyst |
Growth Stages of Amethyst
These are the 4 growth stages of amethyst:
Amethyst starts as a small amethyst bud and then grows into a medium amethyst bud. The medium amethyst bud grows into a large amethyst bud, and then finally becomes an amethyst cluster. This growth process happens naturally in the game as time passes.
To get an amethyst shard in Minecraft, you will need to mine an amethyst cluster. This is the only growth stage that will drop amethyst shards when mined.
Congratulations, you just learned about the new structure called Geode in Minecraft that will be available starting in the Caves & Cliffs Update.
